Woofing at Ruby Lake Resort
Ruby Lake Resort, a beautiful Sunshine Coast resort in British Columbia, has been welcoming WWOOFers from around the world for over 20 years. Over time, this has become more than a place to stay. It is a place where people experience what many describe as a true Canadian experience.
This is something we hear again and again from the young people who come here. Many arrive in Canada thinking they will work in a city, pay high rent, and try to build a life around minimum wage jobs. Instead, they find something completely different. They contribute their time in the orchard and gardens as part of the WWOOF program, and the rest of their day is their own.
That freedom changes everything. They are not just working. They are living in nature, surrounded by forest, water, and wildlife. They see eagles flying overhead, raccoons in the evening, beavers along the shoreline, and sometimes even bears. For many, this is the first time they experience Canada in this way.
They explore the Sunshine Coast, visit the Skookumchuck Rapids, spend time on the lake, and enjoy simple moments that stay with them for life. Some go out by boat and experience the coastline in a way that feels real and personal.
Life at the resort has its own rhythm. There is time on the lake, paddleboarding, and connection with other WWOOFers. There is the energy of the property, sometimes a festival, sometimes a wedding, where they become part of the atmosphere rather than just observers.
Food is also part of this experience. Ingredients grown on the property are used in the kitchen, becoming part of meals prepared at the restaurant. From fresh vegetables to simple sauces, it reflects a true farm to table approach on the Sunshine Coast.
Many arrive planning to stay for a short period and end up staying for the whole season. They are drawn by the lake, the community, the atmosphere, and the feeling of being part of something real.
We are incredibly grateful to the WWOOF organization for making these connections possible, and to all the individuals who have brought their energy, curiosity, and spirit to Ruby Lake Resort over the years. Their presence supports the land, the gardens, and the life of the resort in a way that continues to shape what this place is today.
